Geek Chic: How To Style Reading Glasses

An interesting thing happened this weekend. It was a busy week and I felt exhausted before going out on Saturday night. Trying to hide my under eye circles, I decided to wear my geeky glasses by Urban Outfitters (also seen here) and HM Loves Coachella romper. Ben complimented my new geek chic look and we had a lovely date. The fun part started at the party that we hit after dinner. As it turned out, some of my friends and acquaintances… did not recognize me wearing glasses! Once I began talking to my friends they realized it was me, but it was an interesting experience to communicate with some acquaintances that I’ve known for years, like we just met a second ago. I guess I’ll continue experimenting with glasses when I am feeling like going through the night undercover.

Meanwhile, if you are feeling geeky too and wonder how to style your reading glasses, here come my top three tips:

ONE // Wear Makeup

Cool glasses attract attention to your eyes; that is why at least some makeup is a must-do. Apply at least two layers of mascara, emphasize your cheeks and/or lips, put on some bronzer…  In other words, create a great canvas so your glasses really standout.

TWO // Have Fun With Accessories

It could be anything: pretty earrings, a few rings, a cuff, or an attention-getting bag. Don’t let your glasses be the only center of attention in your look. In other words, keep following your favorite rules of accessorizing, but do not count glasses as one of the accessories.

THREE // Pick Contrasting Colors

I have a very pale complexion with a blue undertone, that is why I am trying to pick as many “cold” colors in my outfit and accessories as possible. Saying so, I know that black, white, blue, and red glasses with silver details work the best for me while I should be avoiding beige and gold. Think which colors you love the most in clothes and pick your frames accordingly.

FOUR // Control Your Eye Distortion

If you are planning on wearing glasses as a trendy accessory, keep in mind that lenses without any correction are the best as these do not distort the size of your eyes. Otherwise, do not pick reading glasses with a level of correction larger than +0.75. Finally, do not try to remove lenses at all as it turns your chic reading glasses into masquerade ones.

FIVE // Play With Your Hair

Try adding a few braids or waves to move your hair away from your face. That way, you will bring more attention to your frames! I used this simple hair styling trick for creating a side braid, but there are a lot of other options.

Q: Did you ever try wearing reading glasses as accessory, even if your vision is perfect?

    • Yes, it’s seems like a perfect occasion!!

Also, eye glasses are great when I am breaking out – so people’s attention is concentrated on my glasses, not my skin imperfections ;))

Thank you for stopping by, dear Esther!

    • I guess it happened because I never wore glasses before! I mean, my eyesight is very bad and I wear glasses at home, but never to a party. So yes it was a fun experience! 😉

  • Great inspiration. I’m a fellow glasses wearer and I often pick them over contact lenses if I want to hide dark circles. I love your bag 🙂
