One of the reasons I love spending time backstage at New York Fashion Week is that I am always finding some ideas for my hair and makeup. Oftentimes designers are requesting something very complicated and runway-only appropriate, but there are some exceptions. For instance, I found a very cool and easy to repeat look backstage at the Charles Youssef show where I was invited by Aveda team. This effortless hair style works best for girls who have fine, straight hair (just like mine!) and prefer eco-friendly styling products.

On the show, the styling team decided to combine a Japanese-inspired hairdo (Aveda’s Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders called this hairstyle a “Zen Pony”) with a bare-looking makeup which makes the look even more relaxed and effortless. The entire look takes just a few moments and works the best for long or shoulder-length hair.

Here is how you can repeat a loose ponytail that from Charles Youssef’s Fall/Winter 2016 show:

1. Prep your hair with a thickening spray (Aveda team used Thickening Tonic) and blow dry your hair as usual. If your hair is naturally straight, let it air dry and then use a hair straightener to eliminate any freeze.

2. Take a generous amount of your favorite hair oil into the palms of the hands (Aveda team used Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil which smells delicious) and rub into your hair. The oil will make your hair more manageable, shiny, and healthy-looking.

3. Flip your head over and direct all hair in one ponytail. Using a hair elastic, secure the ponytail three inches from the roots of the hair. Flip head back and let the ponytail fall naturally.

4. Take a tiny section of hair near the elastic and wrap it around the ponytail. Hide the elastic underneath the wrap and secure the ends with a pin.

5. Finish the look by misting a bit of Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

As many of you know, I’ve been experimenting with my hair within the last few months and a Zen Pony is one of the looks that I am planning on wearing more often. Since my hair is naturally straight and I love oil-based products, such look seems to be the least traumatic hairstyle for my type of hair.
