In a discussion about the most unique presentations that I attended during New York Fashion Week, I have to mention the new Spring/Summer 2016 collection by the New York City-based designer Rachel Antonoff. Known as a “queen of hipster fashion” and BFF of The Girl’s Lena Dunham, Antonoff presented an astonishing collection and proved that she is indeed a master of extraordinary happenings.
The massive presentation by Rachel Antonoff that took place at the Plaza Hotel was inspired by… camping and outdoor activities. If you ever visited the Palm Court of the Plaza you know how luxurious it looks with its stained glass dome, elegant columns, and grand sculptures. Imagine what a surprise it was when instead of an architectural pearl by Tierry Despont the attendees found… a campsite with all the attributes including fishing, wood chopping, and bird-watching activities.
The new Spring/Summer 2016 collection by Rachel Antonoff was as relaxed and effortless as the vibe at the presentation. Cool jumpsuits made out of fruit-print denim, khaki rompers, open-shoulder romantic dresses—everything in this collection was marked with a stamp of easy-going, comfortable attire everyday wearing. For her models, the designer picked a no-accessories approach and opted in for boat shoes and flat sandals.
The makeup, hair, and nails teams took the same effortless approach while creating gorgeous natural looks for the show. I was lucky to partner with Elizabeth Arden Red Door SPA to take you behind the scenes of the Rachel Antonoff presentation and teach you some tips and tricks that makeup and nail artists used to create the looks for this Spring/Summer 2016 NYFW show.
The Makeup Look: Fresh & Natural
If you follow me on Periscope, you probably remember my interview with the Red Door Spa Makeup Artist, Cesar Olivas, who taught me how to properly apply an eyebrow pencil and how to add glow to your skin by using… a lip gloss. In addition, Cesar provided me with his step-to-step guide on how to replicate a fresh and natural look, with strong, elegant eyebrows, that he created for Rachel Antonoff’s NYFW show.
Step #1: The most important step while creating a natural flawless look is to properly prep your skin. After you washed your skin and applied your regular moisturizer, start with a light coverage foundation or a BB-cream. Cesar recommends using Elizabeth Arden’s Flawless Finish Foundation as it contains shine and oil control ingredients that lasts through heat, humidity, and moisture all day long.
Step #2: Camouflage all those little imperfections that any skin has, such as the under eye circles and accidental breakouts, with a concealer. Give a try to Elizabeth Arden Correcting Highlighter that helps to brighten up your eyes without creating a cakey effect.
Step #3: To make your skin tone even more even, apply a matte powder in the t-zone area (check out my list of recommended products HERE). Then, add just a bit of lightweight cream blush (I personally recommend THIS ONE) to the apples of the cheeks to create a healthier appearance.
Step #4: Fill in brows by using Elizabeth Arden’s Beautiful Color Natural Eye Brow Pencil. Since the brows are a major focal point of this makeup look, make sure to make yours dark and intense, but don’t go over your natural shape. Square or pointy brows will not work for this look so avoid any sharp lines. Then, apply a clear brow gel to tame unruly hairs (I personally prefer this one).
Step #5: Since we created a strong brow look, our eye makeup should be on a natural side. Start by applying an eye primer followed by a matte neutral eye shadow. Cesar recommends using Elizabeth Arden Eye Shadow in Tempting Taupe as the consistency of this eyeshadow palette is very soft and luxurious. “It’s important not to use shadows that are dark or glittery when creating a natural look,” says Cesar.
Step #6: To add depth to the eyes, apply Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Precision Glide Eyeliner in Java or Black Velvet underneath the bottom lashes. For a softer look, smudge the eyeliner with a cotton swab. Follow by a volumizing mascara applied on top lashes only.
Step #7: Prep your lips with a Chapstick of your choice (I just tried Chapstick Total Hydration in Fresh Citrus and loved it).
Step #8: If you usually use a lip liner, apply one prior to finishing the look with a lip color. For models at Rachel Antonoff’s show, Ceasar used Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick in the shades of Mandarin, Melon and Tropical Coral.
The Nail Look: Neutral & Well Maintained
To compliment Rachel Antonoff’s 90’s inspired collection, Red Door Spa Creative Lead Nail Artist, Iwona Opiola kept the nails clean, simple, and well maintained. The idea was not to overshadow the relaxed and effortless designs created by Antonoff by excessive nail colors. I truly agree with Iwona that your nails should match your outfit; that is why I picked myself a very neutral shade of nail polish for the entire New York Fashion Week.
Follow the below tips by the Red Door SPA to create a natural, healthy looking manicure at home:
Step #1: File nails into a rounded shape and buff the nails.
Step #2: Apply CND Cuticle Away and remove any loose cuticle. This product is a best-kept secret of professional nail technicians from all over the world as it’s the most effective product for softening skin and removing tough calluses.
Step #3: Prep your nails for the polish by dehydrating the nail plates with a nail polish remover that contains acetone. By doing so, you protect your nail polish from chipping.
Step #4: Apply one coat of Essie’s First Base Coat (that’s my favorite one too), then apply two coats of Essie’s nail color in Ballet Slippers.
Step #5: When your nail polish is completely dry, apply CND Solar Oil for added hydration.
