My Tips on What to Wear on the Fourth of July

Patriotic Chic Outfit 2015I love celebrating Fourth of July weekend because it’s a time for family gatherings with barbecue, fireworks, and catching up time with Ben’s nephews and his niece. What I don’t like about this holiday is that many people take too literally the idea of dressing in ‘patriotic’ red, white, and blue outfits. Don’t get me wrong; I love combining those colors in my outfit, I just don’t like the idea of turning each piece of clothing into the American flag. When putting together your Independence Day outfit, keep in mind the following tips on how to look chic while wearing your patriotic attire…

#1: Color Variety
Don’t forget about all of the middle shades of the classical red, white, and blue colors. Think outside the trivial tricolor scheme: brick red, pearl white, and electric blue are more interesting shades that still keep you within the ‘legal’ palette.

#2: Accent Piece
Let me be clear here: more than one reference to an American flag is more than enough for your Fourth of July outfit. In other words, feel free to wear your statement American flag t-shirt but don’t combine it with identical print pants. An overload of prints is a big no-no.

#3: Comfort Notion
Many Independence Day activities are happening outdoors and thus you want to make sure that you feel comfortable in your patriotic outfit. Yes, you can wear high heels for a barbecue party (and I am sure you will receive tons of compliments), but it would be more appropriate and comfortable to pick wedges or even flats.

#4: Bag Talk
Don’t assume that a black bag fits any outfit. When it comes to a classic red-blue-white color palette, itโ€™s better not to introduce too many additional colors into your tricolor look. An inexpensive summery bag that matches your outfit will look much better than an expensive one that is just not the right color.

#5: Accessorize
A red-white-blue outfit doesn’t look complete if you are not wearing any accessories. Trust me, your casual chic outfit will benefit from being spiced up with nautical bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. Check out Anthropologie, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger for inspiration.

#6: Hat
A nice hat might be helpful if you are planning to spend a lot of time outdoors. Quick styling tip: upgrade your hat with a patriotic color ribbon that matches your outfit. That little detail will make a big difference!

#7: Cutoffs
Need a last-minute outfit idea? Wear your favorite pair of jeans cutoffs combined with a cute top a la patriote. Guaranteed: nobody will notice that you didn’t plan your outfit way in advance!

#8: Sunglasses
If you don’t feel like wearing bright colors over the Fourth of July weekend, try a pair of colorful sunnies. Shades of red, blue, and white will work with most outfit styles and face shapes. Check out those and those sunnies by RayBan for inspiration. Last minute sunglasses purchased at the supermarket will do too!

#9: Nail Art
Nail art has become an important part of everyone’s outfits, especially during holiday seasons. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to experiment with red, white, and blue colors and score a cool look by following one of those DIY nail art ideas.

#10: Red lipstick
Finally, Fourth of July weekend is a perfect opportunity to put on your favorite red lipstick. Hey, it is a perfect patriotic color!
