Recently my friend Amanda from Lipstick Is A Life blog published an interesting post where she talks about guys who claim that they don’t like girls who wear “too much” makeup, while they adore actresses and celebs with tons of makeup on their faces that just looks natural. I felt very strongly about protecting women’s rights to wear whatever makeup they wish and not limiting their creativity only because some guy told them they do not look “natural”. At the end of the day, the only person allowed to make any comments about your look is yourself. Saying so, I decided to join the challenge started by Amanda and create an easy ‘no makeup’ look so everybody can see how much beauty products go into looking… natural. Make sure to read the end of this post as I’ll be giving away five sets of tinted moisturizers that you need in case you decide to go for one product only ‘no makeup’ look.
Step #0: Every good makeup starts with a proper skin care regime. Saying so, never apply foundation or primer if you didn’t properly wash, tone, and moisturize your skin (you can read about my everyday skin care routine in this post). Need some extra freshness? Apply a facial mask for a few minutes and a tiny bit of a primer (yes, even if you are using a tinted moisturizer!).
Step #1: My number one secret of creating a bare skin look is a proper base. In my opinion, radiant skin starts with a tinted moisturizer that provides a somewhat sheer coverage that nevertheless camouflages all skin imperfections that you might have. My current favorite tinted moisturizer is Cosmedicine Honest Face Tinted Moisturizer, by the same brand I recently mentioned in my skin care routine post. I wear this product every single day (yes, even when I’m heading to the gym) as it provides my skin with the boost of brightness and radiance, while protecting it from the sun.
PRO TIP: My number one trick of applying a tinted moisturizer is by dabbing it into my skin with a beauty blender. Many girls believe that since tinted moisturizer contains less pigment than a regular foundation, they should follow the same rules as with a moisturizer, i. e. apply it with your hands right after washing and toning. I believe that tinted moisturizer is still a foundation that is why I apply it with a foundation sponge—after moisturizing my skin and before applying a concealer.
Step #2: In my book, natural looking skin is the one without visible blemishes and imperfections. Saying so, no matter how natural I want my makeup to look, I always apply concealer under my eyes and on top of any breakouts I’m currently dealing with. My current favorite concealing product is Too Faced Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer in Very Fair as it provides natural looking, but full coverage. I dab a few dots onto my skin and blend the product with a pointy side of my beauty blender.
Step #3: No matter what type of look I’m planning on creating that day, I always groom my eyebrows. If I’m planning on going out or feel like wearing a full-face makeup look, I follow the eyebrow routine that I described in my recent post. For a more natural look, I simply brush my brows with a tinted gel (my current favorite is Zoey Van Jones Tinted Brow Gel). Then, I apply concealer under my brow and blend it with a flat concealer brush so my brow line is more clean and pointy.
PRO TIP: Don’t use a concealer that is brighter than your foundation tone as it will create an unnatural look.
Step #4: Next step might sound a bit counter-productive, but I love applying Becca Backlight Priming Filter on top of my tinted moisturizer as it adds just a bit of shimmer and doesn’t look too glowy for a ‘no makeup’ look. I apply it with the same beauty blender on the high points of my cheeks and on the cupid bow.
Step #5: In my humble opinion, a blush is a product that you really need to keep in control if you want your face to look as natural as possible. Brightly colored blush is one of my favorite products to use, but when I’m applying a minimalistic-looking makeup, I prefer subdued shades of pink—like those from Stila ‘Perfect Me, Perfect Hue’ Palette in Fair/Light. My current favorite brush to apply blush is this golden ombre brush that I reviewed in my July Beauty Favorites post.
Step #6: Even when my lids look eyeshadow-free, there is still some pigment involved. One of my latest purchases, Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette, features the exact shades you need for creating nude lids look. I apply Tempera shade all over my lid using MUA Professional Crease Brush and add a bit of Warm Taupe shade onto the outer corners of my eyes to emphasize the lash line.
Step #7: Before applying mascara, I love putting on a bit of a setting powder on my skin with a damped beauty blender. Concentrate on the T-zone and keep your cheeks powder-free—it will look more natural!
Step #8: Finish your eye makeup by applying just one layer of your favorite mascara and brushing your lashes afterwards. If your lashes are naturally dark and long, feel free to apply a clear gel instead of mascara (like this one by e.l.f. cosmetics).
Step #9: It’s up to you whether you’d like to wear a lipstick or just a lip balm, but since I don’t have much of a natural pigment in my lips, I decided to brighten up my look with a hint of a hyper-moisturizing lipstick by Too Faced in Nude Beach.
