How to Find Your Pre and Post Workout Beauty Plan

Workout Beauty Rules

Do you wear makeup to the gym? I never ever do it because I feel that it causes breakouts. What I do instead is make sure to have my pre- and post- workout skincare is on point. Today, I share with you my favorite products that I use before and after hitting the gym. That way, you will have a few ideas on which products to introduce into your pre and post workout beauty plan.

For me the most important thing about pre- and post-workout skincare is to wash my skin with proper cleanser, re-hydrate it after a wash, and protect from the sun. While you can totally achieve a designed outcome with the same set of skincare products for each use, I prefer going an extra mile and have different products for before and after a workout.

Think about it as of pre- and post-workout snack: you have to receive specific nutrients to make your gym efforts matter. Same with skincare: if you know your ingredients, you’d be able to provide your skin with the exact products it needs.

Pre-Workout Skincare Routine

I’m trying not to strip my skin too much prior to a workout since I know that I’ll be washing my face again in about an hour. If your skin type allows, go for an oil-based cleanser or use a cleanser that is suitable for sensitive skin.

My personal favorite pre-workout cleansing product is Eve Lom Gel Balm Cleanser — it’s gentle and hydrating, and I feel that it provides exactly what my skin needs in the a.m. I also enjoy Erno Laszlo White Marble Cleansing Oil — even though it features oil as the main ingredient, it doesn’t provoke my acne-prone skin and doesn’t leave the oily residue. For people with sensitive skin, I recommend Elemis Sensitive Cleansing Wash — this gentle cleanser has been one of my favorites for the longest time, especially on the days when my skin is reacting on a new skincare or makeup product. Not only it cleans my skin perfectly well, it also smells divine!

The next step is a moisturizer. Usually, I go for something with Hyaluronic Acid – such products are usually featuring a lightweight formula that immediately absorbs into my skin and doesn’t move while I’m sweating at the gym. My recent discovery is PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum which is perfectly lightweight and incredibly nourishing. My all-time favorite is SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator, an overall excellent smoothing and softening moisturizer.

I never leave the house without sunscreen on and before a workout I prefer products that are very durable and don’t melt while I’m working out. My go-to sunscreen for years is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50, it’s gentle and fast-absorbing — I just can’t recommend it enough. I also appreciate lightweight formulas of Lancome Bienfait UV SPF 50 and Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Sunscreen SPF 50 — both are fluids that require shaking before application that protect and improve my skin on so many different levels.

Post-Workout Skincare Routine

Perhaps, the most important tip I can give to anyone struggling with acne is to wash your face the moment you finish with your workout. I explain the science that goes into this in my How to Fight Acne post, but for now, all I can say is that I finally realized that majority of my skin problems was associated with not cleaning my skin from all the sweat and bacteria right after I finish at the gym. These days, I carry a salicylic acid or clay-based cleanser in my gym bag so I can wash my face immediately after a workout — yes, even if I’m heading straight home after the gym!

My absolute favorite post-workout cleanser is La Roche Posay Toleraine Purifying Foaming Gel that features the gentlest Salicylic Acid formula I’ve ever encountered. It doesn’t strip my skin at all while clarifying it from all the dirt and sweat my skin was exposed to during the workout.

Another all-time favorite is Elizabeth Arden SuperStart Probiotic Cleanser that features a completely different, clay-based formula. Thanks to the probiotic blend that comes in this formula, it’s also ideal for purifying your skin after a workout. A more affordable version of the same concept is SkinFix Foaming Clay Cleanser — this award-winning formula is ideal if you have combo skin as it helps to balance your skin out without over-drying it.

For my post-workout moisturizer and sunscreen routine, I prefer the 2-in-1 type of products, so I save some space in my gym bag. That way, I’m protected from the sun while walking 15 minutes to and from the gym, and my pores are not getting clogged with sweat mixed with makeup

I’ve been raving about La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer SPF 30 for the longest time so here is a reminder: if you have sensitive, acne-prone skin and need a great hydrator with SPF, look no more — especially because this product comes at such affordable price.

When it comes to tinted moisturizer with sunscreen options, Paula’s Choice RESIST Super-Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 is a great, lightweight and all skintone-suitable option. If you need a higher sun protection, definitely look into Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50. This creamy moisturizer with SPF contains anti-aging ingredients and the gentlest sunscreen which makes your skin instantly hydrated and plump.

While pre- and post-workout routine is something not many people are talking about, I feel that it’s an important concept to understand. Personally, I’ve been working out very consistently lately and I could only imagine what would happen with my skin if I was not following these simple but effective pre- and post-workout skincare rituals. I wonder what’s your pre- and post-workout skin care regiment?
