How to Maintain Color-Treated Hair

Disclosure: This post is brought to you by Moroccanoil.

It’s been a while since the last time I touched up my hair color. I have an ombre hair color that grows evenly and doesn’t need monthly touch-ups. But it’s not only about finding a colorist specializing on trending colored hair techniques that allow my hair to look well-maintained and silky for all these months.

I believe that the main factor in my hair care routine for color-treated hair that I’ve been following religiously. I’m happy to share my tips and tricks that will help to extend the lifespan of your new hair color.

Brush Your Colored Hair In The Shower

My number one problem with color-treated hair is that it tangles SO MUCH. Even though I have shoulders-high cut, sometimes I can’t move my brush below the ear point. My hairstylist once said that it’s because I have a lot of hair and my hair is thin. That’s why I have to use a special technique to detangle my hair in the least damaging way.

What I’ve been doing lately is brushing my hair while taking a shower. I know, it sounds counter-intuitive, but it really works.

Basically, I wash my hair with shampoo as usual. And after applying a conditioner for hair treated hair (mine is Moroccanoil Color Continue Conditioner), I take a paddle brush and brush my hair while under the water. That way, I rinse the conditioner and brush my hair at the same time.

Another trick is to always use a leave-in hair conditioner like Moroccanoil Protect & Prevent Spray. It helps to relieve tangles so I love spritzing it before blow-drying my hair for additional hair smoothing effect. When I use this spray, my hair looks straight and glossy.

Protect & Prevent – I Couldn’t Have Said It Better

Another important strategy for maintaining colored hair is something that people tend to forget. I hope that at this point we all know about the importance of protecting your skin from the sun, but how about your hair?

It might come as a surprise, but the hair color fades from the sun! So, it’s important to use UV protection on your hair too. No worries, you don’t have to apply it daily — just a few spritzes of Moroccanoil Protect & Prevent Spray when you blow-dry your hair and you are all set.

Another environmental damage that ruins not only your hair color but also hair texture is a thermal heat. We are talking about all the flat irons, blow-dryers, and curling wands you are regularly styling your hair with.

You will be totally fine if you use hair styling tools a few times per year, but if you do it weekly, it’s time to think about a decent thermal spray.

The good thing is that Moroccanoil Protect & Prevent Spray that I mentioned above helps to target both issues at once: thermal and UV protection. So, you just apply it once while blow-drying your hair — and you are ready to go!

Color-Treated Hair Rule: Forget About Sulfates

Finally, make sure that your shampoo and conditioner do not contain sulfates that wash away your hair color quicker. Sulfates also strip away the natural oils that make your hair more damage-prone. So if you want to protect your hair and prevent the damage, read the labels carefully. Make sure your hair care products are labeled as sulfates-free.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been testing Moroccanoil Shampoo and Conditioner and I love that both Moroccan oil products are sulfate-free. I especially enjoyed the shampoo because it’s not as foamy as your regular shampoo. It features a lower pH formula that is ideal if you are trying to protect the vibrancy of your colored hair.
